Just before Christmas my company decided I needed an Apple iPad. The idea being that as a work productivity tool, and as a tool when to use when speaking to customers I would be able to present myself and the company as “cool” as we all as productive. Well I have been using the 11 inch version of the iPad now for a few weeks and I have to say, that I really do not see what all the fuss is about.

I was really intrigued as not only do I not have an iTunes account, I do not use an iPhone, nor a Mac. I was literally an Apple virgin. Obviously I have seen and used iPhones or an iPod in the past, but only when using from someone else. This iPad is mine. I get to unpack and set it up. The first thing I noticed as have millions before me, is how well presented and packaged Apple products are. And they feel nice to the touch. But I was not impressed.

My first impressions:

  • Beautifully packaged and presented
  • Great screen
  • Lovely feel
  • Great battery life
  • No scroll  back button on the device for the browser. Only a gnarly < shaped arrow which I have to scroll to
  • Crummy looking lo-res icons
  • Touch screen no better than others
  • Heavy

I could go on. But you get my point. Sure its nice. Sure it seems well made and is an object to lust after for its looks…. maybe. But is it worth the expense. Not to me.

Perhaps if I had an early Apple iPhone which blew away the competition, I would be an Apple bigot by now like so many others. But I wasn’t. So by the time I had this iPad I was already used to great products like the HTC One phone and even the latest Kindle Fires with their amazing HD screens. These and other manufactures are of course heavily  influenced by Apple. But to me the iPad is heavy, expensive (if I had to buy with my own money), and does nothing that to me justifies the much higher price points. Plus I feel I am being suckered into the Apple eco-system. With its All Apple, all The Time mantra. Sorry Apple. I admire you. I do not love you. Lets stay just friends.
